رَدَدْتُI turned back الملامَthe reproach علىupon العاذلينْthe reproachers
وَحَقّقْتُand I confirmed شَكّهُمُtheir suspicion باليقينْwith certainty
I turned reproach back upon the reproachers,
I blamed the censurers,
and confirmed their suspicions with certainty.
And verified their doubts with certainty,
وقلتُand I said سيغفرُwill forgive ربّthe Lord of العبادِthe servants
ذنوباًsins تُعَدّare counted علىagainst المذنبينthe sinners
And I said, “The Lord of His servants will forgive
And said: the Lord of worshippers will forgive
sins counted against sinners.”
Sins counted against the sinful.

So I crowned the graceful garden of youth
So I crowned the garden of beautiful youth
with a lush garden and flowing water,
With a peer garden and flowing springs,

and wine whose fire, when mixed, you see
And winds—you see their fire in the atmosphere—
fashioning the smallest rings from water.
Casting from the water the images of maidens.

On nights in whose blackness you frolic,
Nights frolicking in their darkness,
as fleet steeds frolic beneath their urging riders.
As the meteors dash with the waves,

And a dark night I thought had lined
And a night I made resplendent, as kohl
the watchers’ eyes with the kohl of darkness.
Bedecks with the darkness’s kohl the eyes of the onlookers.

Its sea swelled, so I boarded the cups—
When its sea raged, I rode little ships
ships made of them, bound for the sea’s shore.
To its sea’s shore therein ships.

تُجنconceals منof النورlight عنّاfrom us جنينan unborn child
And you would think the darkness of its womb
And you reckon the darkness of its depths
hid from us an unborn child of light.
Begets for us from light a baby.

As though the stars of its deepest darkness
As if its thickets’ stars
were daisies in lush gardens along the horizon.
Were meadows’ virgins on the horizon, rapt.

As though it had a lion thrusting out
As if it had a lion coming out for your eyes,
its brow from a lair before your eyes.
His forehead bared from a cave,

And a red wine spreading the fragrance of perfume,
And a redness which spreads the scent of wine,
with joy for the sorrowful folded in that scent.
And in its folds—joy for the woeful!

Well-aged wine, the earth split open to reveal it,
Manumitted, the earth split from it,
and through it joy came alive in one entombed.
And the liveliness of bliss revived in it its entombed.

It grew up with the sun throughout its life,
It grew together with the sun in its lifetime
passed from lap to lap of the years.
Transported in the breasts of years.

With it I galloped through the night in intoxication,
I raced through it by night intoxicated,
praying to it with my brow in prostration.
As I bowed praying to it with my forehead.

بصيديَwith my quarry حوراءa dark-eyed beauty منfrom سرْبِa herd of عينwide-eyed gazelles
There I secured, beyond a doubt,
There undoubtedly I gained
my quarry: a dark-eyed beauty from a herd of wide-eyed gazelles.
My spoils—a houri from the herd of virgins.

I breathed upon the throat of a camphor-white beauty,
I breathed in the neck of a camphor-tree
who anoints herself with perfume at every moment.
Which exudes perfume at all times.

And I kissed a cheek whose rose you see
And kissed a cheek—you see its rose
fresh, parting to reveal jasmine.
A peer cleaving open the jasmine.
ولماand when وَشَتْtold بِحِمامِof the death of الدّجَىdarkness

حمائمُdoves يَنْدُبْنَهُthey lament it بالرّنينwith ringing cries
And when the death of darkness was proclaimed
And when at the darkness’s turtledoves’ call
by doves mourning it with ringing cries,
The turtledoves bemoaned it with soft mourning,
تَحَيّرْتُI was bewildered والصّبّand the lovesick lover ذوpossessed of حيرةٍbewilderment
إلىuntil أنthat حسبتI thought شماليmy left اليمينthe right
I was bewildered—and lovers know bewilderment—
I was perplexed and dawn, too, bewildered,
until I mistook my left for my right.
Till I reckoned my left hand my right hand,
وخاضَand waded بيَwith me الحزْنُgrief بحرَthe sea of الدّموعtears
فأرخصْتُso I cheapened درّthe pearls of المآقيthe eyes’ corners الثمينprecious
And grief waded with me through a sea of tears,
And sorrow delved in my tear-sea—
so I squandered the precious pearls at the corners of my eyes.
So I shed the dear pearls' treasures;
وقدand indeed عجبَmarveled الليلُthe night منat مُغْرَمٍa lovesick man

And night indeed marveled at a lovesick man
While the night wondered greatly at a lover
who wept at the smile of a radiant dawn.
Who wept at the smile of a clear dawn!
