أرسلتُI sent طَرْفيmy gaze يقتضيseeks from طرفَهاher gaze
وَعْداًa promise بهthrough it أُبرئُI cure أسقاميmy ailments
I sent my gaze to seek from hers
I sent my gaze to find her gaze
A promise by which I might cure my ailments.
Promising it would cure my love-sick heart
فعادso it returned عنهfrom it للحشاto the heart جارحاًwounding
كرَجْعَةِlike the return of السهمِthe arrow إلىto الرّاميthe archer
It returned from hers, wounding my heart,
But it returned wounded by her indifference
Like an arrow returning to the archer.
Like an arrow shot back upon its archer
فقاتليso my slayer طرفيَmy gaze لاnot طَرْفُهَاher gaze
والجَفْنُand the eyelid منfrom جرحِthe wound of الحشاthe heart دامِbleeding
So my own gaze, not hers, is my slayer,
So I blamed my eyes, not her eyes
And my eyelid bleeds from the wound in my heart.
With the wound from her indifference still raw
