وَصَفْتُI described حُسْنَكِyour beauty للسّاليto one who had forgotten love فجُنّso he went mad بهfor it
كأنّas though للسمعِfor hearing منهfrom it رؤيةَthe vision of البصرِsight
I described your beauty to one who had forgotten love, and he went mad for it.
I described your beauty to the inquirer, so he went mad with desire,
As though hearing had the eye’s vision of it.
As if hearing had for him the sight of vision.
فلمso did not يزلcease فيamong وجوهِthe aspects of الحُسْنِbeauty مُقتبِلاًturning toward
بالوصفِthrough description فيin صُوَرٍforms منهاfrom them إلىto صورِforms
So he kept turning toward the facets of beauty,
He did not cease to turn towards the faces of beauty,
Through description, from one of its forms to another.
With my description, from image to image.
وكيفand how يَخْفىbe hidden عليهfrom him ماwhat كلِفْتُI became enamored بهof it
إذاwhen الدّلائلُthe signs دَلّتْهُguided him علىto القمرِthe moon
And how could what I am enamored of be hidden from him,
How could what I was charged with be hidden from him
When the signs have guided him to the moon?
When the proofs pointed him to the moon?
