I burned the remnant of her tooth-stick out of envy
I burned the leftover fragrance of your miswak out of envy
of it, for kissing pearls dazzling white amid her dusky lips.
Of it for kissing your moist lips in intimate embrace

And in my ignorance I did not know that her saliva
gives the twig the scent of fragrant aloeswood.

May I never again burn a twig used to brush a mouth:
No longer will I burn a stick of your miswak, for
burning it makes the anguish of longing fiercer.
Its burning only increases the intensity of the burning
