إلىuntil كمhow long أرانيI see myself فيin هَوَىdesire النفسِthe soul خائضاًwading
ولمand not أتّقِI guard against الإِغراقَdrowning منهاfrom it علىupon نَفسيmyself
How long shall I see myself wading in the soul’s desires,
How long have I immersed myself in following my desires,
without guarding against its drowning me?
And did not avoid drowning myself in them?
وقدand already شَمِلَتنْيhas enveloped me شيبةٌgray hair لمnot أبِتْI spend the night بهاwith it
فماso what ليَfor me فيin ليليmy night وقدand already طَلَعَتْhas risen شمسيmy sun
And gray hair has enveloped me, with which I have spent no night;
Grey hairs have covered me, which I did not refuse,
so what have I to do with my night, now that my sun has risen?
So why should I spend my night in vain when my sun has risen?
غرستI planted بكفَّيَّwith my two hands المعاصيَthe sins جاهِداًstriving hard
ولاand no شكّdoubt أنّيthat I أجْتَنيI harvest ثَمَرَfruit الغَرسِthe planting
I planted sins with my own two hands, striving hard,
With my own hands I planted sins persistently,
and there is no doubt that I harvest the fruit of that planting.
And no doubt I have reaped the fruits of what I sowed.
إِلىto اللَّهGod أَشكوI complain جُملَةًa whole collection أَرتديI clothe myself بهاin it
وأصْبحُand I enter the morning منهاthrough it فيin الذنوبthe sins كماjust as أمْسيI enter the evening
To God I complain of a host of sins in which I clothe myself,
To Allah I complain of the garment I clothed myself with
and through it I enter the morning in sin, just as I enter the evening.
And I start and end my days sunk in sins.
فياso, O وحشتيmy loneliness منbecause of سوءِthe evil of ماwhat قدّمَتْhas sent ahead يديmy hand
إذاif لمnot يكنْis فيin القبرthe grave منfrom رحمةٍmercy أُنْسيmy comfort
So, alas for my loneliness because of the evil my hand has sent ahead,
So pity my loneliness for the evil my hands presented
if I have no comfort from mercy in the grave.
If there is no mercy for me in the grave where I will reside.
