God has willed only that victory be yours,

and that faith demolish what unbelief has built,

and send the foreign foes back after contending with them,

disgraced, with abasement and subjugation in their wake.

    ولاح بِوَجه الدين من ذِكره بِشرُ

    May a conquest delight you, one that set the sword lapping among them;

at its mention, gladness shone upon religion's face.

Through good fortune, God clothed you in majesty,

and radiant light from which the bright stars draw their glow.

were necklaces for necks—the keen, severing swords,

and Khatt spears inscribing lines through their chests,

their eyes blue and their bodies red.

on the tips of branches surrounded by pools.

    And clouds were lodged in the hollows of quivers;

their downpours were arrows from the Zanj, not rain.

And steeds beside which you see the foreigners' horses,

when compared with them, as asses—not those the wilderness foaled.

As though lions were mounted upon their eagles,

their fangs curved and their eyes embers.

their hands were empty of everything they sought.

They called to one another like flocks of sandgrouse in their lands,

and in every outlying region they had a troop.

When their host had fully gathered, they embarked with it

upon the back of a wave-swollen sea, its horizons gray.

and no creature can endure its warfare.

met drowning in the surge of waves, or captivity!

and horses with which they packed the ships, yet there was

for them in the field of battle neither charge nor retreat.

but abasement and terror made them dismount.

no recompense or thanks for that from your highness.

under keen swords, on its island, they were slaughtered prey.

as at death a breast grows too tight for a breath.

And amid mountains of spears it dragged toward them

their deaths by slaughter—your immense host,

life among them flown, yearning for its appointed end,

meteors with fire but no embers.

Was there no discerning man among them with sound judgment?

with which its lung is moistened when it grows dry.
