Had the dwelling not been effaced,

I would not spend the night desolate from the gentle oryxes' cruelty.

From every garden of beauty whose blossoms are fragrant,

She offers me love through a glance and through companionship.

When the red ʿanam shoots complained of her fingertips,

Then polish the daisies of gleaming teeth and dusky lips.

She turns, as if by magic, the eyes of a fawn's mother,

With languid glances that steal away minds.

Never before her have I seen an oryx praised

Among the herd for an adored high-bridged nose, not a snub one.

She has beauties—such is youth's unfair dealing—that have made

The charms of slender maidens beside hers seem like darkness.

She beguiles the self-possessed and captures him; whoever sees her

Is like a tipsy man immersed in drunken madness.

A sun, restive before the gray hair from which she has bolted

Away, yet with a bridle yielding readily to youthful passion.

I marvel indeed—though gazelles are timid—

At a gazelle in her bower preying on the thicket's lion.

Gray hairs have appeared, and the moons behind veils have not

Risen upon me, nor have the bān-tree stems swayed.

So much so that the whiteness of gray hair seems to have moved

Into the dark eyes of shy, companionable maidens.

If the hunt for fleeing gazelles has eluded me,

Then you can see what my steed is among the steeds of care.

How many a gray steed has hunted the herd's gazelles! Why, then,

Is my gray one standing fetlock-deep in soft sand?

Sixty-six years! How can you, with me, overtake

One whose age amounts to a sixth of those years?

God bless the youth that I shall never forget!

Had it been a person, I would have said, 'He has forgotten me.'

May he who parched her water the charms of the dwelling's lady,

In torrents, from every bursting cloud whose lightning laughs.

And the she-camels entering its vast plain despite the darkness,

Bearing every gallant, deeply rooted in nobility and keen of wit.

As they fling their riders across the barren wastes, they seem

Arrows in their swift trot, bows in their leanness.

Like eyebrows, they sought refuge, thirsty,

At the desert's eyes—springs choked up and effaced.

Water is held nowhere but in their last belly-reserves,

In their wanderings; hidden wells guard drops within their livers.

    Each a swift-trotting she-camel with bloodied footpads,

Startled by the voice of a harsh driver behind her,

Estranged from human speech, he finds companionship

Among the hungry, dust-gray wolves of the trackless waste.

What can you say, while the ocean's depths drag him along?

A ship does not sail on dry land.

Pause, you there, and ponder an age

Full of calamities; picture its reversals and judge.

Do not seek peace from it,

For honey is not to be sought in a viper's mouth.

The wealth in a man's hands is only a loan,

Like a garment stripped from another and put on him.

Yet he keeps increasing it and storing it,

Out of love for it, between covetousness and guards.

Air indeed surrounds all souls; say, then:

Is their share of it anything but what escapes with a breath?

I am a man upheld by the ways of truth,

My honor purified; I do not approach defilement.

I am accustomed to gracious silence for which I am not blamed,

Yet mine is lucid speech, free of ambiguity.

I do not move within my jaws, out of anger,

A tongue that rends and gnaws at people's honor.

The wise, discerning man may bridle his speech,

And many an utterance, gone astray, has proved like dumbness.

Ignorance in a person's character is deadlier than

A faltering pulse in a relapsing patient's crisis.
