And a lofty-gazing mount was brought near for the hunt,

while night slept, heedless of us, and dawn awoke.

We rode out early upon her withers, stalking with her

quarry that peopled the desolate land.

Boldly questioning clouds and earth about the quarry

were raptors upon our palms, their eyes narrowed.

Swift knights, they advanced in coats of mail

of patterned feathers; no white swords or brown spears were made for them.

And droop-eared hounds, whose ears you see as watchful eyes,

their ears pricked, while dust has turned them grey.

    نَتَائِجُها مِنهُ إِذا وُضِعت شُقرُ

    And a flint mounted a piece of iron at breeding time;

her offspring by him are red-haired when born.

From it a little hawk's wing fluttered among us,

like a sparrow's flight-feather sent flying by fright.

A fire-kindler set over it the bellows of his lungs,

to endure its heat, though his breast had cooled.

With it we restored life to an ash-grey carcass,

tossed by wind and beaten by rain.

Its hearthstones had stood for a stretch of time,

bare as mounts no cooking pot had ridden.

And when its embers blazed and its tresses were braided,

and its red locks were shorn by our hands—
