O slender grace of the bān bough, what bent you down?
And O harmony of a close-knit gathering, who scattered you?
وياand O شؤونيmy tear ducts وشأنيand my state كُلّهُall of it حَزَنٌsorrow

And O my tear ducts—my whole state is grief—
pour forth the rubies of my tears, and hold back your pearls.

I thought my heart, as my anguish tossed it,
nothing but a sandgrouse’s wing held fast in a snare.
لاno صبرَendurance عنكِwithout you وكيفand how الصبرendurance عنكِwithout you وقدwhen already
طواكِfolded you away عنfrom عينيَmy eyes الموجُthe wave الذيwhich نَشَركunfolded you
There is no bearing your absence; how could there be, when
the wave that unfolded you has folded you away from my eyes?
هلّاwhy not وروضةُwhile the garden ذاكthat الحسنِbeauty ناضرةٌflourishing
لاnot تلحظُsees العينُthe eye فيهاin it ذابلاًwithered زَهَركyour blossoms
Why not spare you, while the garden of that beauty was flourishing,
and no eye saw your blossoms withered there?
أماتكِkilled you البحرُthe sea ذوpossessing التيَّارthe current منout of حَسَدٍenvy

The sea with its currents killed you out of envy,
when it knew its pearls envied your mouth.
وَقَعتُI fell فيinto الدَّمعِtears إِذwhen أُغْرِقتِyou were drowned فيin لُجَجٍdeep waters
قَدindeed كادَnearly يَغمِرُنيengulfs me مِنهُfrom it الَّذيthat which غَمَرَكengulfed you
I fell into tears when you were drowned in deep waters;
what engulfed you almost engulfed me in those tears.
أَيَّwhich الثَّلاثَةِthe three أَبكيshall I mourn فَقْدَهُits loss بِدَمٍwith blood
عميمَabundant خُلقِكِyour good character أمor مَعناكِyour inner worth أمor صِغَرَكْyour youth
Which of these three losses shall I weep for in blood:
your boundless goodness, your inner worth, or your youth?
منfrom أينwhere يَقْبَحُis it wrong أنthat أفنىI perish عليكِfor you أسىin grief
والحسنُand beauty فيin كُلِّevery فَنُّform يَقتَفيfollows أثَرَكْyour footsteps
How could it be wrong for me to perish in grief for you,
when beauty in every form follows in your footsteps?
كُنتِyou were الشَّبيبةَyouth إذْwhen وَلَّتْit departed ولاand no عِوَضٌreplacement
منهاfor it ولوeven if رَبحَgained الدُّنياthe world الَّذيthe one who خَسِرَكlost you
You were youth itself when it departed, and there is no replacement
for it, even if the one who lost you were to gain the world.
ماnot كنتُI was عنكِaway from you مطيلاًprolonging بالهوىout of love سَفَريmy journey

وقدand already أطَلْتِyou prolonged لِحَيْنيto my undoing فيin البلىdecay سَفَركyour journey
Out of love, I never prolonged my journey away from you;
yet, to my undoing, you have prolonged your journey in decay.
هلwhether واصليwhat reaches me منكِfrom you إلاexcept طيفُa phantom ميّتَةًa dead woman
تُهْديbrings لعينيَto my eyes منfrom ذاكthat السكونِstillness حَرَكmovements
Does anything reach me from you but a dead woman’s phantom,
bringing my eyes movement out of that stillness?
أُعانقُI embrace القبرthe grave شوقاًin longing وهوwhile it مشتَمِلٌencloses
عليكِaround you لوif كنتُI were فيهwithin it عالماًknowing خَبَرَكyour condition
I would embrace the grave in longing, for it encloses
you, if within it I could know how you fare.

I wished, O light of my eye, that my sight had shielded
your skin from stones and clinging dust.
أقولُI say للبحرto the sea إذas أغشيتُهُI covered it with نظريmy gaze
ماnot كَدّرَclouded العيشَlife إلاexcept شُرْبُهاher drinking كَدَركyour murky water
I say to the sea, as I spread my gaze over it:
Nothing clouded life but her drinking your murky water.
هلاwhy not كففتَyou withheld أُجاجاًbrine منكfrom you عنfrom أُشَرٍfine-edged teeth

منof ثَغْرِthe mouth لمياءَa dark-lipped woman لولاbut for ضعفهاher weakness أسركcaptured you
Why did you not withhold your brine from the fine-edged teeth
of a dark-lipped beauty, whose mouth, but for her weakness, would have captured you?
هلاwhy not نظرتَyou looked إلىat تفتيرthe languor مُقْلَتِهاher eye
إنيindeed I لأعجبُtruly marvel منهat it كيفhow ماnot سَحَرَكbewitched you
Why did you not look upon the languor of her eye?
I truly marvel at it: how did it not bewitch you?
ياO وَجْهَface جوهرةَJawhara المحجوبَveiled عنfrom بَصَريmy sight

منwho ذاis it that يقيكَshields you كسوفاًan eclipse قدalready علاcovered قَمَرَكyour moon
O face of Jawhara, veiled from my sight,
who can shield you from the eclipse that has covered your moon?
ياO جِسمَهاher body كَيفَhow أَخلوcan I be free منof جوىburning anguish حَزَنيmy grief
وأَنتَwhile you خالٍempty مِنَof الرّوحthe soul الَّذيthat عَمَركinhabited you
O body of hers, how can I be free of my grief’s burning pain,
when you are empty of the soul that once inhabited you?
ليليmy night أطالَكَlengthened you بالأحزانِwith sorrows مُعْقَبَةًvisited in succession
عليّupon me مَنْshe who كانَhad بالأفراحwith joys قدalready قَصَرَكshortened you
My night, she has lengthened you with sorrows visited in succession
upon me—she who once shortened you with joys.
ماhow أغْفَلَoblivious النائمَthe sleeper المرموسَburied فيin جدثٍa tomb

عمّاof what يُلاقيsuffers منof التَّبريحtorment مَنْthe one who سَهِركkept vigil through you
How oblivious is the sleeper buried in a tomb
to the torment suffered by one who keeps vigil through you!
ياO دُولةَreign الوصلِunion إنif ولّيتِyou departed عنfrom بصريmy sight
فالقلبُthen the heart يقرأreads فيin صُحْفِthe pages الأسىsorrow سمَركyour evening tales
O reign of union, if you have vanished from my sight,
the heart reads your evening tales in the pages of sorrow.
لَئِنif indeed وجدتُكِI found you عَنّيfrom me غيرَnot نابيَةٍturning away
فإنّthen indeed نفسيَmy soul منهاfrom it ربُّهاits Lord فطركfashioned you
If indeed I found you never turning away from me,
then it was from my own soul that its Lord fashioned you.
إِنif كانَhad أَسلَمكِsurrendered you المضطَرُّthe helpless one عنby قَدَرٍfate’s decree
فلمthen did not يخنْكِbetray you علىin حالٍany circumstance ولاnor غَدَرَكdeal treacherously with you
If the helpless one gave you up by fate’s decree,
he never betrayed you in any way, nor dealt treacherously with you.

Was he anything but a drowning man with his hand raised,
forbidden the cup by the One who commanded you to drink it?

فكيفَhow then أطْمَعَmade hopeful فيكfor you النفسَthe soul وانتظَرَكand awaited you
Did death not bar you from visiting him?
How, then, could he make his soul hope for you and await you?

If tears, all across his cheek,
flaunt themselves, he weeps in sorrow for your modesty.
وماand not نَجوتُI escaped بِنَفسيwith my life عَنكِaway from you راغِبَةًdesiring to leave
وإنّماbut only مَدّprolonged عُمْريmy life قاصرٌthe one who shortened عُمُرَكyour life
I did not escape with my life out of any wish to leave you;
rather, He who shortened your life prolonged mine.
