لمdid not أسْلُforget عنْهُabout him وقدthough already سَلاhe forgot عنّيabout me
فالذّنْبُso the fault منهfrom him وضِدّهُand its opposite منّيfrom me
I have not forgotten him, though he has forgotten me.
So the fault is his, and mine its opposite.
قمرٌa moon ملاحاتُcharms الورىhumankind جُمِعَتْwere gathered
فيin خَلْقِهِhis form فَنّاًone variety إلىalongside فَنِّanother variety
A moon—all humankind’s charms were gathered
In his form, one kind of beauty upon another.
قدindeed كانhe used to يبلغُreach منin مواصلتيintimacy with me
ظنّيmy expectations وفوقَand beyond نهايةِthe utmost limit الظنِّof expectation

ويضيفُand would add ريقَتَهُhis saliva بقبلتِهِwith his kiss
كَإضافةِlike adding السلوىquails إلىto المنِّmanna
And with his kiss he would add his saliva,
Like adding quails to manna.
فاليومَbut today ينفرُhe recoils منfrom ملاحظتيmy glance
كَنِفارِlike the recoiling إنْسيٍّof a human منfrom الجنِّthe jinn
But today he recoils from my glance,
As a human recoils from the jinn.
