May death extinguish my life if I have found solace,

while you remain a captive in your chains.

And if my tears do not rival the rainclouds' downpour

for you, may their morning showers never water me.

I have cast off my heart, which once was laughing,

and wear my eyelids only as they weep.

And my joy does not obey me on a day of gladness,

nor does my grief defy me on a day of distress.

And am I anything but one who asks after you and listens

to tales that weep blood for lofty virtues?

Your fetters were forged of iron, yet they were

only favors from you to those guilty of wrongdoing.

A blessing aids you, though you never asked for it,

so you cleave our nights with flashes of light.

You bared your leg to them; whenever you bared it before,

you would sever necks or shear off forelocks.

They settled heavily, allowing you not a step,

as though you had never raced fleet steeds in their prime.

The clanking of black fetters has kept you awake, though often

fair women lulled you to sleep, entertaining you with songs by night.

And I never feared to hear it said: “Muhammad—

a stroke of fate bears cruelly down upon him.”

A sword of battle, he lay sheathed in prison,

and dawn found him stripped of the trappings of rule.

And a lion of war, whom they wrongfully enslaved there,

though once he charged boldly upon the lion.

So, O mountain whose heights time has shattered,

were you not securely established, rooted in glory?

You were confined before fulfilling the desire for which

time ran in your service, on foot and barefoot.

And fear of their onslaught may shackle heroes

and make the restraint of ravening lions secure.

I say, as I hasten in dread of a cry

at which all answer the one who calls them to God:

“Is this the moving of mountains, the scattering of stars?

What was to come among the signs of the Gathering has drawn near.”

As though you had not made your lances kohl-sticks,

    splitting open the eye-corners of pitch-black night;

and had not deepened the darkness with battle-dust

    when dawn whitened its edges;

and had not turned the water of white blades foul with blows

    when it was poured clear upon heads in battle;

and had not sent the blue spearheads back with thirst quenched

when they came gleaming to drink the water of throats.

And many a horse bore a man staking his life

for your approval, whenever you were content with death.

And they had put on pools of rippling water

as coats of mail, and unsheathed keen blades like streams.

And how many tyrants' lives you took,

and left tall spears in their breasts,

in a battlefield of blows and thrusts, whose sleek steeds

pass over the fallen chargers, charging onward.

All that passed with the days of joy, and there came

their opposite afterward—what a thing it is!

When your command prevailed in the kingdom with right guidance,

    as your right hand made a keen blade known through its blows;

and when you were secluded within your pavilion,

fate spoke there only words of congratulation.

I pass by palace gates and go out in the morning,

communing in my heart with him who has departed from them.

And I recite—not what I once recited within them—

“Ah, greet the deserted traces at al-Zurq.”

And I call upon their sons, lord after lord,

and after them I have become unending sorrow.

And fresh ruins—whenever I visit them,

I pour over them my tears and rhymes.

You departed, worthy of praise, like a cloud that cleared away,

having clothed the dwellings in spring's embroidery.

I shall make my eyelids bleed with sleeplessness as punishment,

if they ever withhold from you their flowing tears.

And I shall deny myself a pleasant life,

for you are alive, yet worthy of elegies.
