Even if my bones were my reed pens, and from my blood

came my ink, and from my skin my parchment for his glory,

and you spoke on high in finely polished words,

and I traced with darkness the wings of the sun,

it would be paltry beside his immense claim

upon majesty's very soul—let alone my own.

And a mistress of my soul, through whom I gained my wishes,

had driven loneliness from me with companionship.

And I encountered in her every meaning, counting each one,

revealing imagination's very soul in the ink's blackness.

As though I were in a garden, delighting my gaze,

its sublime meanings too subtle for the senses.

I beheld with my own eyes the script of Ibn Muqla,

and it poured eloquence from Quss upon my hearing.

And I feared for it, lest a sorcerous eye strike it,

so I made the Verse of the Throne my protective charm for it.
