A delicate girl—beauty’s water flows over her cheek,

Like dew flowing over a fresh, unfolding rose.

She swayed her sides away from tenderness and bent,

Like a drunkard reeling in the east wind’s coolness.

You would think her leg were drawing its arched sole along,

Yet it is neither tethered nor let loose.

So I said to her, “O loveliest of wide-eyed women in gait,

Are you a raincloud in the sky, or a torrent in a gravelly bed?”

Indeed, the opposites in your beauty have made wretched

A youth whose spirit finds no respite in love:

Generosity with estrangement from one plump and rounded,

And stinginess with union from one slender and sash-girt.
