بهِ أرَدْتُ خمودَ الجمْرِ فالتَهَبا

Longing broke the seal upon the tears, and both poured forth.

وما تَيَقّنْتُ أن الماءَ قبلهما

يكونُ للنار ما بينَ الحَشَا حطبا

Before those two, I had never known for certain that water

And before them both, I had not known that water

could serve as fuel for the fire deep within the breast.
