And many a battle, weeping through the eyes of wounds,

When she laughs, baring the mouths of spears—

For her I donned the clouds as a coat of mail,

    And unsheathed her blazing lightning.

With it I cleft the armor over the mailed warrior,

As the surface of a flowing pool is cleft.

On a black steed, from whose valiant rider descends

Death upon the life of every brave man.

A hoof bears it flying; even its slow pace

Has outstripped lightning in a hurried flash.

So my sword gleams white against the steed's blackness,

And red with the gore of heads.

And were blue eyes dipped into that blackness,

Their blue would be exchanged for kohl-darkness.

And mine is a resolve that has never traded, on night journeys,

The vigor of wakefulness for the sleep of sloth.

Whenever I hurl it at the darkness,

Its sides split open, revealing flames.

And for those seeking gifts, my wealth is ravaged

By my right hand's giving, with a champion's deadly force.

And in bounty I outstrip the pouring rain,

With a generous man's hands and a bashful man's cheeks.

If verse embraces the beauty of rhetorical art,

How does the deliberate composer compare with the improviser?
