And a body whose spirit of delight comes from another,

Offspring of udders suckled on the milk of clouds.

When the pitcher draws choice wine from it,

The drinkers around it share it out with the wooden cup.

We drank while dawn showed a white blaze in the night,

Spreading ever wider from east to west,

In a garden kept alive by the serpent of a stream,

Over which the shade of the branches' wings falls back,

In a radiant setting where revelry unveils brides,

Whose seats are the hands of the noble among the drinkers.

As though they wore red gowns of wine,

Their collars buttoned with moist pearls.

And many a dark-red wine's cup seems to you

To have a dusky lip with a sweet dark tint.

When mixed, it softened for us and changed

Its nature, forsaking the harshness of a headstrong, unruly steed.

Water flowed through the veins of fire, as though

Peace's contentment in it were warding off the wrath of war.

And if one afflicted with melancholy takes a draught of it,

Spirits seep from it into the heart.
