My heart turned from union with slender forms,

While youth's water still clothes my bough in leaves.

I was weaned with a passion for high honor,

Racing youth along its far-reaching course.

And I have always trodden just above al-Simak,

Gazing toward its pole as I ascend.

Nothing brings the old man to water except that

Whose traits shine forth in the newborn.

    ويُحْفَظُ للبيتِ كلّ القَصيدِ

    I cherished the idols for love of one idol;

And a whole ode is memorized for one verse.

But I found high honor a rival wife,

At odds with every bashful maiden.

    قيامي لَها فارعٌ مِنْ قعودِ

    So I rose, and with me rose ambition;

For its sake I rose high from my seat.

No town ever lulled my resolve to sleep,

    Though it wakes a dullard's weakness in the untried;

Nor any tender, languid woman reared in ease,

Fragrant with a waft of musk and aloeswood,

Bidding farewell at parting, palm to palm,

And breast to breast, and neck to neck.

Whoever seeks glory must descend to

The tall steed's back from a tender virgin's breast,

And, despite fear, hurl resolve against resolve,

And night against night, and desert against desert.

God be praised for my land, which has ever been

A covert for gazelles and a thicket for lions.

There is the fawn with Babylonian eyelids,

Shunning union, at home with rejection.

A languid glance from him sets love in motion,

Blunting the edge of my piercing gaze.

Whose mane is woven of iron.

Then makes it lap the dark blood of the jugular.

    Hell's wardens, created for war,

They kindle its fires with fuel.

Their fire-pokers are honed blades, fashioned

To crush skulls since the days of Hud.

They draw out what bodies conceal

When they strike with what scabbards conceal.

    They turn against the rancorous

    Their spearheads, with rancor.

    Stars that rise upon spear-shafts,

    But set within livers.

    Their sleek horses' hooves inscribe

    Prayer-niches scattered across the earth.

The heads of their foes fall in battle,

    Prostrate before them—what a prostration!

And many a lightning flash, its gleam ablaze

Like the wingbeat of a love-stricken heart,

Shows you the curve of archers' bows

When drawn with a forceful pull.

May God water the protected land with a cloud from it,

    Whose laughter peals with thunder:

The field of cavalry charges, the frontier of holy war,

The steeds' racecourse and the fugitive's refuge,

Where you pit fierce-eyed men against fierce-eyed men,

    And bright-browed against bright-browed, proud-necked against proud-necked.

And the bodies of their living dwell in bliss,

And the souls of their dead dwell in eternity.
