The leaves of bright swords, whose blossom is blood, grazed

through them on foliage whose blossoms the meadow smiles to reveal.

Mighty warriors—in battle's terror their steeds gallop,

bearing them over what the straightened spear-shafts pour forth.

    سحائبها نَقْعٌ وأمطارها دمُ

    Stars rise heavily with them upon al-Khatt's slender lances;

their clouds are dust, and their rains are blood.

Lions depart in fear from their thickets

when they settle there to pasture and pitch camp.

You see every stretch of sky, from their spears and their dust,

star-studded by them when they march, and darkened.

    وَأَلسِنَةُ الأَغمادِ عَنهُم تُتَرْجِمُ

    Eloquent on battle's morning, their silence is rare;

and the tongues of scabbards speak for them.

As though, in their hands when they strike necks,

were their resolves, if those could take bodily form.

When death's deeds and their own deeds are alike

upon the souls of battle's champions, they are one and the same.

Bedouins: among their tribe's offspring were sired

by A'waj and Shadqam the mounts they urge at speed.

I accompanied them into an empty, desolate tract of land,

where the wolf howls and the gazelle calls.

May God water an eye sweet with tears for having wept

for Hizar, where the body's heart is enslaved by love.

A land where the brilliant stars meet me whenever

they rise above it, while it sleeps, heedless of them.

In a land whose joy kills your cares,

and where pleasure erases the sins of misery.

How many a true, helpful friend I have there,

lavish with gifts, yet reverent toward honor!

He pours generosity into the hands of supplicants,

    though he blazes with valor.

When champions flee, he charges back, and his sword,

consecrated in his right hand, makes the foreign foe's blood lawful.

A sea surges with him, as though its bubbles

were gleaming mail upon him, its links firmly woven from that sea.

We are sons of the frontier, whose mouths

smile when war frowns at them.

Our weanling is nourished by the milking of jugular veins,

in battle's lap, the very hour he is weaned.

The rear and front of the vast army are ours,

where the points of tawny lances shatter against us.

Our number doubles whenever the horsemen are counted,

as though each lone brave man among us were a mighty host.

    تأخّرُ ما يلقى الحتوفَ تَقَدُّمُ

    We are held back in every rearguard so that we may advance;

for those who face death, falling back is advancing.

If renewed war places its reliance

upon us, not every star can hurl missiles.

And on battle's day it weaves, from our sleek steeds' weaving,

cloaks over us, which it embroiders with great vultures.

So there is many a bold warrior upon an A'waj-bred mare,

    through whose charges the birds of battle feed on flesh;

and a flying mare, bearing a stalwart rider at full rein,

whose superiority in racing lightning is conceded.

We struck at God's enemies in the heart of their home,

with a raiding host plunged into death's maelstrom.

A vessel swims with it among the foreign foes, casting its shadow,

like broad-winged eagles circling high in the air.

    إذا وَضَعتْ في ساحل الرّوم صَيْلَمُ

    One is pregnant, though no sire has made her kneel;

when she gives birth on the coast of the Rum, she brings devastation.

And others are devoted to war, built for it—

birds bearing lions, swimming through the water.

As though bows were set in their wave-cleaving hulls,

from which arrows are nocked at the prows.

And they send forth naphtha that rides the water, burning,

like molten metal with which Hell roasts faces.

Cities wage war upon the foreign foes' cities,

forcing them open with swords and taking spoils.

And men who make shirts of iron their clothing—

when champions shrink from battle, they advance.

As though they had waded through a mirage on a level plain,

where you see the eyes of locust hatchlings upon them.

We stood firm against them with noble endurance; nor was it palatable

to us, the honey, until bitter colocynth had gone down.

The cleaving of our blows left gaping mouths in them,

whose molars were keen-edged swords being notched.

And indeed, the iron in our hands speaks,

though, when it passes into other hands, it is mute.

And the wings of the banners flutter among us,

as though the champions' blood upon them were crimson dye.

Did lightning flash from a mottled ridge by the dwelling,

like one waving a hand, greeting with his fingers?

It milked tears from eyes that kept vigil,

and lined them with light while the night was dark.

How wondrous a visitation, whose phantom came

to eyelids where slumber was only imagined!

It visited a pourer of tears at a wasteland's edge,

with the foot-pad of a lean she-camel, slapped whenever wetted.

And it brought perfume from her fragrance, while between her

and one who braves terrors lie a steppe and a vast sea.

And dawn has a light within darkness, like a covering

of sweat on a black horse's chest after long galloping.

I yearn for my land, within whose dust

the joints and bones of my kin have decayed,

as one longs in night's fetters, in a trackless waste,

for home—an old camel rumbling with longing.

And now my hands have emptied of youth's first freshness,

yet my mouth is full of the memory of youth.
