Many a night I clasped a bough to me,

Leafy, clothed in the freshness of bliss.

On it a pomegranate jousts with my chest,

    Sharper than the keen spearhead.

I ask its rose about a chrysanthemum,

From which honey is gathered in the dew of saliva.

So I parted the anemone of its two lips,

To reveal bubbles speaking of pure wine.

And the blue of the sky clothed itself in clouds,

Whose thunder resounded with a prized male camel's bellow.

And every downpour kept our tale-bearers away

From every road, with the serpents of torrents.

And as if the pitch of darkness were set ablaze,

By lightning's naphtha across both horizons.

My patience and hers grew frail with a breeze,

Describing its dawn with delicate meaning,

And songbirds that sang; but for my renown,

I would have wailed at their singing with every gasping breath.

May God make the one who wept pearls laugh,

In mercy for the one who wept carnelian.
