ولَمّاand when تَلاقَيناwe met وأثْبَتَand proved عِندَهاto her
نُحوليmy wasting وَتَبريحيand my torment مِنَof الحُبِّlove ماwhat عِنديwithin me
And when we met, and it was made plain to her
When we met and she affirmed
By my wasting and torment what love I bore within,
My love and passion for her
خَلَعناwe bestowed عَلىupon الأَجيادِthe necks أَطواقَnecklaces أَذرُعٍarms
كَأَنّas though لَناwe had رُوحَينِtwo souls فيin جَسَدٍa body فَرْدِsingle
We placed upon our necks necklaces of arms,
We threw off all restraint
As though we had two souls in a single body.
Like two souls in one body
كَأنّas though عناقَthe embrace الوَصلِof union لاحَمَfused بينَنَاus together
بِريحٍwith wind ونَارٍand fire منfrom زَفيريmy sighs وَمِنand from وَجديmy passion
As though the embrace of union fused us together
Our embrace fused us together
With wind and fire from my sighs and my passion.
With the fire and wind of my sighs and passion
وَلَمّاand when أَتانيcame to me الصبحُdawn ذُبْتُI melted ولمand did not تَذُبْshe melted
فَياso, oh لَكَfor you مِنof شَوقٍlonging خُصِصْتُI was singled out بهfor it وَحديby myself
And when dawn came to me, I melted, but she did not.
When morning came I melted but she did not
Ah, what longing was reserved for me alone!
Oh what an aching longing I alone was left with
