ولمَّاand when التقىmet الأجسامُthe bodies منfrom غيرother than ريبَةٍsuspicion
وقَدand already تَلِفَتْperished بالشوقِfrom longing فيهِنَّwithin them أَنفُسُsouls
And when the bodies met without suspicion,
When bodies met with no doubt between them,
while souls within them had perished from longing,
And souls were woven with longing within,
جنيناwe gathered ولمand not تُنْسَبْwas attributed إليناto us جنايةٌan offense
ثمارَfruits نعيمٍbliss تُجْتَنَىare gathered حينwhen تُغْرَسُare planted
we gathered, with no offense ascribed to us,
Like fruits of bliss when first planted,
fruits of bliss, gathered when they are planted.
No wrong was attributed to us then.
ولمّاand when اسْتَقَلّrose النجمthe star يَرْفَعُraises رايةًa banner
يحلّarrives بهاwith it نُورٌlight ويرحلُand departs حِنْدِسُdeep darkness
And when the star rose, raising a banner
When the star rose high raising its banner,
with which light arrives and deep darkness departs,
Its light descended and the Pleiades withdrew,
تنهّدْتُI sighed مرتاعَalarmed الفؤادِthe heart وإنّماand only
تنهدتُI sighed للصبحfor the dawn الّذيthat يَتَنَفَّسُbreathes
I sighed, alarmed at heart; yet it was only
I sighed, my heart filled with turmoil,
for the dawn that breathes that I sighed.
Yet I only sighed for the dawning day's breath.
فياso, O صُبْحُdawn لاdo not تُقْبِلْcome فإنّكَfor you are مُوحِشٌdesolating
وياand O لَيلُnight لاdo not تُدبِرdepart فإنّكَfor you are مؤنِسُcomforting
So, O dawn, do not come, for you bring loneliness;
O dawn, do not draw near, for you bring loneliness,
and O night, do not depart, for you bring comfort.
O night, do not depart, for you bring comfort.
