And one leveling a spear of death for the thrust—

no rival answers her if one day she calls him out.

until her torments plunge into his entrails.

If the yellow bahār flower's color is not hers,

her pallor must come from jaundice creeping through it.

    Her fury is clothed in a repellent form;

the eye sees in her everything that alarms it.

She has tipped a spear's bent shaft for thrusting

with a jujube thorn whose raisin lies slain.

No eye before her has seen a slender lance

whose joints are arrayed like a blade's watered pattern.

She has a thrust no observer can discern,

nor can its physician pass a probe into it.

Because of her I forgot Qays and the memory of the man he stabbed,

and slight is her substance, yet immense her calamities.

when she drops, her thud startles hearts.

And a hidden pricking of bodies, as though it were

her lookout in every place it seeks.

From every quarter one guards against her harm, as

her wolf prowls under the wing of darkness.

her tail already crowning the top of her head.

With an eye in which your own eye sees blue,

though her share among eyes is small.

Her form resembled a crab as she advanced,

and her creeping brought her two horns forward toward it.

And one reciting from the Qur'an, 'Say: nothing shall befall us,'

when the bright stars' hour of setting had come,

says, as the roof of the house flings her at him,

'A pebble of death! Alas for the soul she strikes!'

So he brought his sandal down upon her, and she shattered,

her dry sides splintering like glass.

    فكيف يوالي رقدة يستطيبها

    An enemy is she whose house man inhabits;

how, then, can he prolong the sleep he finds sweet?

Were it not for God's kindly protection of us,

the world's calamities would be poured down upon us.
