وحمّامِand a bathhouse سوءٍwretchedness وخيمِfoul الهواءِthe air
قليلِlittle المياهwater كثيرِmuch الزّحامِcrowding
And a wretched bathhouse, foul of air,
In a hot and steamy bathroom,
with little water and much crowding.
With little water and crowded space,
فماso there is no للقيامِfor standing قعودٌsitting بهin it
ولاnor للقعودfor sitting بهin it مِنْany قيامِstanding
So those standing there cannot sit,
Neither sitting nor standing feels right,
nor can those sitting there stand.
Each posture brings the same unease.
حنيّاتُهُits arches قانصاتٌhunters لنفسيof my soul
وَقَطْرَاتُهُand its droplets صائباتُunerring السهامِarrows
Its arches hunt my soul,
The pouring of water pricks my soul,
and its droplets are unerring arrows.
The drops like stabbing arrows tease.
ذكرْتُI recalled بهَin it النّارَthe Fire حتىuntil لقدْindeed
تخيلتُI imagined إيقادَهاits kindling فيin عظاميmy bones
There I recalled the Fire, until indeed
It makes me think of hellfire's heat,
I imagined it being kindled in my bones.
Scorching through my very bones.
فياso, O رَبّLord عَفْوَكَYour pardon عنfor مُذنبٍa sinner
يخافُfears لقاءَكَmeeting You بَعْدafter الحِمامِdeath
So, O Lord, grant Your pardon to a sinner
Oh Lord, forgive this sinner's deeds,
who fears meeting You after death.
Who fears to face you, the Great Judge.
