And a white sword—you imagine its watered pattern

stirring fine dust above a stream.

When death is summoned by a shake of it,

it answers with a bell's jangling.

And it is never drawn to strike without spilling

upon its cheek the tears of the mortal wound.

Your eye sees in it the ghoul of death,

intent on devouring the sword-polisher's hand.

And water holding death's choking fits,

    melted within a blazing flame.

    أَلا إِنَّني مُنْصُلُ المنصلِ

    It girded itself with me when I girded myself with it;

behold, I am indeed the sword of the sword.
