    And a slender-figured beloved

    Torments the souls of her lovers

    بدا للمها بعض أحداقها

    With an eye that, when it bewitches with languor,

    Reveals to the oryxes a glimpse of her eyes;

    فتذوي نَضَارةُ أوراقها

    And a figure that kills the boughs' vitality,

    So the freshness of their leaves withers;

    And a song that raises, through overwhelming joy,

    The sorrowful soul to its feet.

    Thirst-maddened camels are so entranced by it that they forsake drinking

    Clear water to sustain their last breaths.

    And the doves, if they hear it, bestow

    Upon her the necklaces of their neck-rings.

    Who, then, will help a lovelorn man of gentle nature,

    Tormented by the roughness of her nature?

    فيا وَصْلَها جُدْ بإطْلاقِها

    You see her rejection binding his soul;

    So, O union with her, grant it freedom!
