أميرٍa prince علىover الوَحشِthe wild beasts المقيمةِdwelling فيin القَفْرِthe wilderness
And a lion dwelling in impregnable thickets,
A powerful lion residing in impregnable thickets
a prince over the wild beasts dwelling in the wilderness.
A prince over the beasts dwelling in the desert
يُوَسِّدُhe pillows شبليهhis two cubs لحومَflesh فَوَارسٍhorsemen

ويقطعُand he blocks كاللّصّlike a thief السبيلَthe road علىagainst السَّفْرِthe travelers
He pillows his two cubs on the flesh of horsemen,
Who pillows his cubs with the meat of horsemen
and, like a thief, bars the road to travelers.
And blocks the road like a brigand on the highway
هزبْرٌa mighty lion لهhe has فيin فيهhis mouth نارٌfire وَشَفْرَةٌand a blade
فماso he does not يَشتَويroast لحمflesh القتيلِthe slain man علىover الجمرِthe embers
A mighty lion, with fire and a blade in his mouth,
He has a growl in his throat like fire and claws
so he does not roast the slain man's flesh over embers.
So roasted meat does not satisfy his hunger
سراجاهhis two lamps عيناهُhis two eyes إذاwhen أظلمَgrows dark الدّجىthe night's darkness
فإنso if باتَhe spends the night يسريroaming by night باتتِspend the night الوحشthe wild beasts لاnot تسريroaming by night
His two lamps are his eyes when night grows dark;
His eyes are lanterns when the night grows dark
so if he spends the night roaming, the beasts spend it without roaming.
If he travels at night, the beasts do not travel

He has a forehead like a shield, and a nose
He has a forehead like an anvil and a mouth
as though its edges were stained with ink.
As if dyed with ink around its edges

Thunder resounds from his mighty roar,
Thunder rumbles from his great roaring
and lightning flashes from his red inner eyelids.
And lightning flashes from his red paws
لهhe has ذَنَبٌa tail مُسْتَنْبَطٌfashioned منهfrom it سَوْطُهُhis whip

He has a tail from which his whip is fashioned;
He has a tail he uses as a whip
you see the earth with its back lashed by it.
You'd think the earth was struck on its back
ويضربُand he strikes جنبيهhis two flanks بهwith it فَكَأنّماso as though
لهhe has فيهماin both of them طَبْلٌa drum يَحُضّurging علىto الكرِّthe charge
And he strikes both his flanks with it, as though
He strikes his sides with it as though
he had within them a drum urging him to charge.
He had a drum urging him on to battle

نيوبٍfangs صلابٍhard ليسnot تُهتَمُare chipped بالفِهْرِby a stone pestle
And, while scowling, he makes his jaws grin, baring the blades
He grins, baring teeth not concerned with decay
of hard fangs that no stone pestle can chip.
Steel fangs that cannot be challenged

He attacks with a paw two handspans wide;
He charges with a paw two handspans wide
its daggers are sharper than cleaving swords.
Its daggers sharper than severed spearheads
يجرّدُhe unsheathes منهاfrom it كلّeach ظُفْرٍclaw كأنّهُas though it were

He unsheathes each claw from it, as though it were
He unsheathes each claw like a crescent moon
a crescent appearing to the eye at the month's beginning.
Newly appeared to the eye at the start of the month
Sol 6.1
