Ah, how often you make Time hear your reproaches!
How much do you make time hear your reproaches,
You address it, yet it understands no speech.
Addressing it though it knows not your address?

ويُبْقي ما حييتَ لك الشبابا
Do you hope it will restore a loved companion to you,
Do you hope it will show you any kindness,
And keep your youth for you as long as you live?
Letting your youth last as long as you live?

ويتركُ آهلَ الدّنْيا يَبابا
Have you not seen its vicissitudes wear out the new,
Have you not seen it make new things old
And leave the world's inhabited places desolate?
And leave the people of this world confused?

فبرؤك في نوىً تُمطي الركابا
And if staying put is a sickness for you,
If longing for the past makes you ill,
Then your cure lies in departure that sends the riding-camels onward.
Your cure lies in intentions covering the trail.

وهمّكَ همّ مرتقِبٍ أموراً

And your concern is that of one awaiting events,
Your concerns are a watcher's, expecting things
You wander far from home in pursuit of their wonders.
That roam strangely, causing alienation.

Indeed, the prudent man is one whose sleep
And if the brother of adversity disliked me,
Is like a frightened bird's sipping from rock pools:
Like the fright of a bird startled awake,
فتىًa youth يستطعمُasks for food البيضَbright swords المواضيkeen-edged
فتىً يستطعمُ البيضَ المواضي
ويستسقيand asks for drink اللهاذمَsharp spearheads لاnot السحاباclouds
ويستسقي اللهاذمَ لا السحابا
A youth who asks bright, keen-edged swords for food,
A lad seeking eggs on the plain
And seeks drink from sharp spearheads, not from clouds.
And asking the crashing waves, not the clouds, for rain,
فصرِّفْso direct فيtoward العُلىeminence الأفعالَdeeds حزماًwith prudence
فصرِّفْ في العُلى الأفعالَ حزماً

وعزْمًا إن نحوْتَ بها الصّوابا
So direct your deeds toward eminence with prudence,
Then in lofty deeds show wisdom and resolution
And determination, if through them you seek what is right.
If you intend thereby to do right,

And, when spurred to action, be a fire
And in the matter of incitement be a fire
That blazes higher with a gust of wind.
That blazes more with the wind’s breath.

For the smith tempered the sharp sword only
The straight blade was not polished
To turn necks aside when it is drawn.
Save to direct its edge at necks.

And do not shun a desert waste,
Do not long for misery you think
Where you take the mirage of its plains for drink.
To be a mirage whose pools are sweet.

For many a kingdom is won by braving deadly peril;
How much dominion is won by courting ruin,
So let fear bar no door to you.
So fear leaves you no confusion?

And I stood in doubt at such contradictions,
I stopped, filled with doubt,
And even the wise man pauses when in doubt.
As the astute may stop when doubtful,

As though Time's benefactor were an evildoer,
As if time’s kindness were harm
For it gives no reward for any deed.
So it rewards no deed.

And if Time took a noble man by the hand,
Had time firmly grasped me,
That would, given its nature, be an astonishing thing.
That would be, by its nature, wondrous.

Drinking wine brings sorrow upon me,
Drinking wine saddens me
And song bequeaths despondency to my heart.
And joy leaves my heart depressed.

And Time's character has contrary traits
In time’s nature is a tendency to disappointment
That embitter sweet draughts in my mouth.
That makes bitterness pass through my mouth.

And after the noblemen of my people, I have been given
After my people lasted, I was changed
Wolves for company, not companions.
To wolves, not comrades, among companions.

And I found my companion at variance with me,
I have befriended one who opposes me,
So I keep company with nothing but a book.
Finding no comrades but books.

And the phoenix is no rarer than a friend
The lonely ostrich, lacking a friend
Who stays kind when Time turns foul toward you.
When time treats you harshly, is not deprived.

And whenever the earth grew narrow around me,
I have not felt the world to be confined
I spread out a spacious spirit in its place.
Save when I make its breadth narrow with my character.

I will wander the deserts with smooth-gaited camels
That bear me across their plains in a plundering rush.

You would take the chatter of their swift forelegs
Seeming, so quick are their forelegs, to speak
For the quick motion of fingertips gathering counting stones.
With hastening fingers that have seized accounts.

They suppose their leader to be a carcass
Mistook the rein at its muzzle for a snake.
Whose bridle they think an insect.

And I travel by night beneath my spearhead's star,
I travel by night beneath a star of my spear
When a star disappears from sight.
When one star sets, another rises.

The dead man seeking glory

Is like one who attains it and then dies.

With it from the cloud of lifeblood, it pours.
On the temples of an opposing sword, pours them forth,

As if on it the fire of the blade were kindled
But for the water of its sheen, it would melt.
And were it not for its wet luster, it would melt,

Though sometimes it is clouded by mist,

As if time had turned it gray long ago
So blood has always been its dye.
Yet its sapwood is still dyed.

Setting necks swaying when I strike with it.
Stirring when I strike necks with it.

Our souls abhorred humiliation and refused it.
Our selves disdaining injustice and refusing it.

We rise in our horizons like stars,
Preparing a shooting star for every devil.
Each reckoned by the demons a shooting star.

We endured calamities through reversals
We endured misfortunes with varying fates,
That would turn an infant gray if he were struck by them.
When the newborn was cast among them, a youth.

We surrendered only our lives
And ancestral honors we cherish in hope of reward.
And accounts we honor with acceptance.

The stars are not exempt from setting
Yet their fall does not bring them to the dust.
But dust does not deliver their news.
