How splendid are true-hearted youths who wed
maidens of the choicest wines.

فاتَّقاهso it warded it off السُّكْرُintoxication عَنهمon their behalf بِالسُّرورwith joy
Sobriety ran riot against them with grief,
so intoxication warded it off for them with joy.

They inhabited youth's dwelling before
decay walked through it with gray hair.
إنّindeed للأَعمارِfor lifetimes أَعجازاًendings إذاwhen

بُلِغَتْare reached لمnot تُثْنَare brought back مِنهُنَّfrom them صُدورbeginnings
For lifetimes have endings; when
these are reached, their beginnings cannot be brought back.

للصِّبَاfor youth نارٌa fire وفيand in الوَجْنَةِthe cheek نورlight
Each one who defies age in his exuberance
is a fire of youth, with light upon his cheek.

They draw life's pleasures from a deep-red wine
whose lifetime has seen many ages.

أَنجُمَthe stars of الكاساتِthe goblets فيin أيديthe hands of البُّدورthe full moons
At evening the cupbearer raised among them
the stars of goblets in the hands of full moons.

Pass me by with the cups, for I
recoil from them in the genial one's hand.
غَمَرَhas flooded الشَّيبُgray hair الدُّجىthe darkness مِنof لِمَّتيmy locks
بِنُجومٍwith stars طُلَّعٍrisen لَيسَتْdo not تَغورset
Gray hair has flooded the darkness of my locks
with risen stars that never set.
لاno نُشورٌresurrection لِشَبابيfor my youth بَعدَafter ماthat
ماتَhas died مِنfrom عُمريmy life إلىuntil يَومِthe Day of النُّشورResurrection
There is no resurrection for my youth after it
has died out of my life, until the Day of Resurrection.
وَخِضابُand dye for الشَّيبِgray hair لاnot أَقبَلُهُI accept it
إِنَّهُindeed it فيin شَعَريmy hair شاهِدُa witness of زُورfalsehood
And I will not accept dye for gray hair:
it is a false witness in my hair.
أَناI مِنْfrom وَجْديmy longing بِأَيَّامfor the days of الصِّباyouth
أَذرِفُI shed الدَّمعَtears رَواحاًin the evening وَبُكورand early morning
I, from my longing for the days of youth,
shed tears in the evening and early morning.
فَكَأنِّيso it is as though I ذوone with غليلٍburning thirst تَلتَظيblazes
لَوعةٌa burning yearning مِنهُfrom him إِلىtoward ماءِthe moisture of الثُّغورmouths
So I am like one with burning thirst: there blazes
a yearning from him toward the moisture of mouths.
أصِفُI describe الراحَwine ولاand not أشْرَبُهَاI drink it
وهيَwhile it بالشّدْوِwith singing علىamong الشَّرْبِthe drinkers تَدورgoes round
I describe wine, but do not drink it,
while it goes round among the drinkers to the sound of song,
كَالَّذيlike one who يأمرُorders بالكرِّto charge ولاand not

يَصْطليfeels the heat of نارَthe fire of الوَغىbattle حَيثُwhere تَفورit seethes
like one who orders a charge but does not
feel the heat of battle's fire where it seethes.
فَسَواءٌso it is the same بَينَamong إِخوانِbrothers of الصّفاpure friendship
وذَويand men of اللَّهوِpleasure مَغيبيmy absence والحُضورand presence
So it is all the same among brothers of pure friendship
and men of pleasure whether I am absent or present.
أَناI مَنbecause of كَسْبthe earning of ذُنوبيmy sins وَجِلٌfearful
وإنِand if استَغفَرتُI seek forgiveness فَاللَّهُthen God غَفورever-forgiving
I am fearful of the sins I have earned;
and if I seek forgiveness, God is ever-forgiving.
