وَرُبَّand many a صُبْحٍdawn رَقَبْنَاهُwe watched it وقدand already طَلَعَتْhad risen

And many a dawn we watched, when there had risen
The remnant of the full moon amid its first heralds,
كَأَنَّماas though أدهمُthe black steed الظلماءِof darkness حينَwhen نَجاit escaped
مِنfrom أشهَبِthe gray steed الصُّبحِof dawn ألْقَىcast off نَعْلَthe shoe حافِرِهِof its hoof
As though the black steed of darkness, when it escaped
From the gray steed of dawn, had shed its horseshoe.
