    When the full moon is enfolded in a grave in decay's domains—

    or a mountain is laid in the grave's earth, brought low—

    an eclipse, a collapse: from both you picture Time

    as darkness for eye and ear, filled with thunder.

    Ali ibn Ahmad departed from this world

    and left it glory and praise through his memory.

    وَسُدّتْ له الأسماعُ وانصَرَفت صَدّا

    We forced belief in the news of his death into denial;

    ears were closed to it and turned away in rejection.

    A reproacher said to the bearer of the calamity:

    Dreadful is the news you have brought—a monstrous thing!

    ومن ذا الَّذي يُخفي منَ الرزءِ ما أَبدى

    Until Time proclaimed his death with its fullest tongue;

    and who can conceal the loss it has laid bare?

    Then we plunged into lamentation, and found no

    escape, unwilling though we were, from believing what it said.

    People said, while the earth swayed beneath them:

    Is this its movement foretold for the Resurrection?

    I see Fihri nobility weeping for the son of its house,

    Ali—should it not weep for a youth who suckled alongside glory?

    O company who hastened with him toward his grave,

    on death's mount, urged onward above their hands!

    فَكُلّ جَلالٍ قَد وَجَدتُمْ له فَقْدا

    You bore upon the wooden bier the one you bore;

    and in him you have found all grandeur lost.

    Your hands have indeed surrendered from him to decay

    a hand that used to shower you with fresh bounty.

    Sorrows gathered in the heart of his home,

    and the times scattered the delegations from his door.

    The bounty-seekers' broad path was barred toward

    generous gifts once bestowed from his fingertips.

    Tell the children of hope: your striving has failed,

    for the sea that swelled for you has ebbed away.

    How many gazelles, after his might sank away,

    roam the horizons, gleaning drinking water!

    Let a generous aspiration weep for Ali,

    from whose dwelling purposeful riders turned their course.

    مِنَ الفَخرِ يَومَ الضّربِ إذ لبس الغِمدا

    And a sword cloaked in damask markings, now stripped

    of glory on the day of blows, since it wore its sheath;

    سنانٌ ذليقٌ ينفذُ الحلقَ السّرْدا

    and a dusky Khatti spear, before whose shaft-joints

    a keen point pierces closely linked mail;

    من اللهذمِ الوقّادِ مطفئةً وقدا

    and dense, steel-woven mail that never ceased

    quenching the blaze of the flaming blade;

    غدا مُرْجَلاً عنه فلم يَسُدِ الجردا

    and a sleek horse that makes sleek steeds weep when it neighs,

    now left riderless, no longer lord of the sleek steeds;

    and a caller who summoned Ibn Ahmad for daunting troubles,

    and he softened in his palms whatever was hard in them.

    And let this suffice to honor a noble man: through him

    aid was sought against Time, the assailant of mankind.

    ومَوتٌ زُؤامٌ في مُقارَعَةِ الأَعدا

    A life enfolding his friends in well-being,

    and a swift, deadly death when clashing with foes;

    رَواعِفَ تَكسو الأَرضَ من عَلَقٍ وَرْدا

    and the lion of war who brings the spears back

    blood-dripping, clothing the earth in roses of gore;

    faithful in advising the king, his judgment never blamed,

    and no schemer undid a knot he had made firm.

    Reason never takes flight within his forbearance, nor

    does jest in his nature overstep earnestness.

    When a mountain's summit is marked with fire,

    you see Ali, in the night, a surer guide than it.

    Ah, Fihr's sons have been bereaved of a splendid man:

    when tracing their descent, they reckoned his age-old nobility.

    He neither accepted abusive speech nor harbored harm,

    nor broke a promise nor withheld a gift.

    Whenever he raced with mature steeds, he outstripped them,

    and came with superior speed, devouring the course.

    ولا مدّ فيه للسَّوابق فامتدا

    God did not shorten the course when he ran along it,

    nor lengthen it for the racers, stretching it out;

    but the bounds of noble breeding accompany a champion:

    no gallop is without a limit He has set for it.

    Men of glorious deeds among the nobles gave him his lineage,

    wielding fiercely eloquent tongues within their mouths.

    When champions hold back from death's engulfing depths,

    their valor bears them like lions toward their deaths.

    You would think they had been clothed, out of their cases,

    in swords, and had drawn India from their swords.

    Never were men of judgment, valor, and bounty counted,

    however many, without his matching their whole number.

    When these qualities are gathered in one peerless man,

    it is only right that people see him as unique.

    What, then, do you think of our describing a crowned king

    to whom Ali, lord of lofty honors, is a servant?

    It pains us that noble women have wept for him,

    melting their hearts into their tears with grief.

    They lament among the trees like mourning doves,

    while grief shakes their supple branches.

    How many a secluded maiden among those sustaining sorrow,

    despite her seclusion, has had tears leave a furrow in her cheek!

    If one who perished could return from death's hand

    through daughters' lamenting, he would be the first returned.

    He passed on with the keenness of a sword whose edge was tried,

    and in his deeds was found to have surpassed all bounds.

    He who left Ahmad and Muhammad behind has not died,

    for the two fill the place that he once filled.

    Yahya built two glories for them in honor,

    although one glory of theirs was brought low.

    وقَد يَثقُبُ النّارَ الَّذي يَقدَحُ الزندا

    Resolve has appeared in both, whose completion is easy;

    and one who strikes the fire-stick may indeed kindle a flame.

    Whoever Yahya's eye has regarded with honor

    has ridden the days and made good fortune serve him.

    O dweller in the grave whose earth encloses

    a martyr, as though death had been honey for him!

    If fragrance wafts from its earth to one breathing it in,

    your glory there has released the musk and incense.

    You shielded majesty from calamity, however grave its peril,

    and stood before it as a barrier, noble of soul.

    بمؤنسة العوّادِ زُرْتَ بها اللّحدا

    You departed, bidden farewell, with some of the spirit within you;

    with what comforted your visitors, you entered the tomb.

    In sorrow I elegized you with the rhymes

    with which I praised you in affection, and you cherished affection for me.

    Praise is only like a guest to a listener,

    but mention of death made it the opposite for him.

    Your world is like a chameleon, ever changing color,

    and what was white to the eye has become black.

    We wished you this world, whose continuance is brief,

    but your Lord willed eternity for you in the next.

    May there always be, from God's mercy,

    dews visiting your palms' bounty within your grave.
