    Your ambition has made firm resolve your mount—ride!

    Do not lay down your staff short of your goal.

    What ails the man of sound insight? The world has changed

    before his eyes, yet he himself has not changed.

    So cross the dust on any tireless she-camel whose

    stride is a ship's swimming through the desert plain's mirage.

    فالشمسُ يَمْرَضُ نورُها بالمغربِ

    Head east to clear a darkness from your radiance;

    for the sun's light grows sick in the west.

    فإذا عَلَتْكَ قذاتُهُ فَتَسَرّبِ

    And water grows foul, standing stagnant in its hollow;

    so when its scum rises over you, slip away.

    Long has my sojourn abroad lasted in lands marked

    by unwholesome pasture and a fouled watering-place.

    So I folded my entrails around the pain that

    was healed only by finding a way to leave.

    أخْرَجْنني منها خروج المذنبِ

    Indeed, calamities assailed me in a paradise;

    they drove me from it as a sinner is expelled.

    فالبسْ لكلّ الناسِ شِكّةَ محرَبِ

    Whoever makes peace with the weak—they seek war against him;

    so don a warrior's battle-gear against all men.

    فاخلبْ بني دنياك إن لم تغلبِ

    Everyone is laying snares of trickery;

    so beguile the sons of your world if you cannot defeat them,

    each a dullard heaped with ignorance,

    as though he were a fragment of deepest darkness.

    فامْرُرْ تُمَجّ وكنْ عذوباً تُشْرَبِ

    The scout of a man's reason does not deceive him;

    so be bitter and you will be spat out; be sweet and you will be drunk.

    والليثُ يأنفُ عن جوابِ الثعلبِ

    And many a contemptible man I have left unanswered;

    and the lion disdains to answer the fox.

    إني لأقْعَصُ كلّ لَقْوَةِ مَرْقَبِ

    Do not count me among men as a weakling bird;

    indeed, I strike dead every she-eagle on a lofty perch.

    I have become like a sword whose scabbard has been worn away

    by the long fastening of its baldric to the shoulder.

    If rust covers it—how many a surface

    of water lies polished beneath the algae!

    How many rhymes, like runaway beasts, have I turned

    from the likes of an unbroken stallion-camel's rumbling!

    And subtleties I have strung together through thought,

    which, even were they pearls, would remain unpierced.

    فقليلُ إيجازي كثيرُ المُسْهبِ

    My hand has joined with native talent, which is its sworn ally;

    so my few concise words equal the long-winded man's many.

    Verbal artistry breathed its magic into my tongue,

    so I spoke in saffron and gilded words.

    If we were birds, the best of us would be told:

    'Sing!' And the worst of us would be told, 'Do not caw!'

    And if you embrace fairness and then weigh me,

    my pebble would outweigh Mount Kabkab in poetry.

    لو شئتُ صَمّمَ وهو دامي المضربِ

    Indeed, I keep my tongue's blade sheathed;

    if I wished, it would cleave clean through, its striking edge bloodied.
