وباقةٍand many a bouquet مُسْتَحْسَنٌpleasing نَوْرُهَاits blossoms
وباقةٍ مُسْتَحْسَنٌ نَوْرُهَا
وقدyet indeed خلتْit is devoid فيin الشمّsmelling منof كلany طيبْfragrance
وقد خلتْ في الشمّ من كل طيبْ
And a bouquet whose blossoms are pleasing,
And many a bouquet has lovely blossoms,
yet, when smelled, it was devoid of every fragrance—
Yet is devoid of all fragrance when smelled—
كمعشرٍlike a company of people راقَتْكَpleased you أثوابُهُمْtheir garments
كمعشرٍ راقَتْكَ أثوابُهُمْ
وليسَand there is not فيin جُملتهمtheir company منany أديبa man of letters
وليسَ في جُملتهم من أديب
like a company whose garments pleased you,
Like a company whose garments delight you,
though among them all there is not a single man of letters.
Though not one among them is a man of letters.
