حَمى حِمى المُلْكِ منه صارمٌ ذَكَرٌ
مُقَابلmatching الجودgenerosity بالعلياءِwith loftiness فيin الباسِmartial valor
مُقَابل الجود بالعلياءِ في الباسِ
A keen, hard-tempered blade of his guarded the realm's sanctuary,
The zeal of kingship made him a firm, honorable man
Matching his generosity with lofty martial valor.
Meeting generosity with nobility in armor
يرعىhe watches over الرّعاياthe subjects بعينٍwith an eye منfrom حفيَظتِهِhis protective zeal
يرعى الرّعايا بعينٍ من حفيَظتِهِ
ويبسطُand he dispenses العدلَjustice منهfrom him ليّنٌgentle قاسِstern
ويبسطُ العدلَ منه ليّنٌ قاسِ
He watches over his subjects with an eye born of his protective zeal,
He tends to the subjects with a watchful eye
And, gentle yet stern, he dispenses justice.
And distributes justice with a gentle, firm hand
كأنّas though سَوْرَةَthe fury كسرىof Kisra عِنْدcompared with سَوْرَتِهِhis fury
كأنّ سَوْرَةَ كسرى عِنْد سَوْرَتِهِ
سكونُthe stillness صورةِof the image كسرىof Kisra وهوwhile he is فيin الكاسِthe cup
سكونُ صورةِ كسرى وهو في الكاسِ
As though Kisra's fury, compared with his own,
As if Chosroes' palace by his palace
Were the stillness of Kisra's portrait, as he appears in the cup.
