For you, O steadfast-hearted one, the fretful heart is love-maddened.

And does everything about loving you terrify it?

    فالعيشُ أنت وَصُوله وَقَطُوعهُ

    So when you grant union, I fear estrangement from you;

for you sustain life and cut it short.

Do not doubt my fidelity, for I

have concealed your secret, though the tears reveal it.

Love moved my heart into my eye, from which

its fountain burst forth in weeping.

    فعلام تَعْذُلُني وأنتَ تُذيعُهُ

    You made me weep, so I divulged your secret against my will;

so why do you reproach me when you yourself disclose it?

The reproacher said, ‘You have indeed submitted to love for him.’

So I answered him, ‘The lover's glory is his submission.’

Desist: the root of an attachment is not uprooted

though its branches are tugged by the tips of reproach.

And your reproach is like a dead Rafidite,

and my hearing, when it announces his death, is like his Baqīʿ.

Ah, who will help a sleepless man whose anguish lingers,

yearning for one whose absence from him has lasted so long?

The heart's hellfire spent the night scorching his heart,

so his tears overflow from a heart that ebbs away.

He bound his eyelids to a lightning flash that pierced the darkness,

and flashed, its gleam like a serpent coursing along.

And it seemed to spend the night speaking of rain

in the green sky, to the eye that listened to it.

It deceived the darkness, and from its gleam came

its probe, its sword, and its blood.

And a rumbling cloud, whose udders flowed with the east wind's breaths,

late at night, for the tender shoots of plants.

Their neck bowed beneath it and bore

more of its weight than it could bear.

And it coursed with it, in heaven's wake, across a tract of earth,

lying dead; then its lands came alive with spring.

And when the east wind passed a meadow's sleeper,

it shook his locks, and his slumber flew away.
