A fate that trips the noble has swept you along,

And an age in which you gave refuge has wronged you.

The gleaming blades within their sheaths have become

Female for ceasing to strike, though they are male.

Our affairs unfold contrary to the course of things,

And time treats humankind justly, and unjustly.

Do you despair on a day that contradicts its yesterday,

While the shining stars revolve through the zodiac?

And lords may yet rise proudly after obscurity,

And full moons emerge after eclipse.

Even if you are confined in a dwelling you made flourish,

Even a lion may be confined, though fierce.

O noblest of captives—that Muhammad should be called

A stranger in the land of the two Maghribs, a captive!

You vie for their release from their shackles,

And the male links among them are snapped by the calamity.

And I lay shrouded in blades, in one of their prisons,

By a wall of theirs—indeed, prisons are graves.

To this day, the night sandgrouse have not been startled by mature steeds

With which a raider strikes at dawn.

Nor has a gift, dewy with generosity, gone forth to bring wealth,

Which a poor man turns over in his two palms.

You have indeed guarded God's religion with the finest care,

As though you were a heart within it, and it an inward thought.

And when you departed with bounty in your hands,

And Radwa and Thabir were shaken because of you,

I raised my voice: 'The Resurrection has indeed come!'

Behold, then look: these mountains are moving!
