عَذّبْتنيyou tormented me بالعُنْصُرَيْنِwith the two elements
بلظىwith the blaze حشايmy innermost being وماءِand the water of عينيmy eye
You tormented me with the two elements:
You tortured me with your glances,
with the blaze in my breast and the water of my eye.
With the heat of your eyes and the tears in mine.
ألْبَسْتِيyou clothed سَقَماًa sickness أراI see
كِyou لَبِسْتِهِyou wore it فيin الناظرينِthe two eyes
You clothed me in a sickness I see
You made me seem sickly to beholders,
you wearing in your two eyes.
As sickness itself appeared in their gazing.
جسميmy body هوit is الطّيْفُthe phantom الّذيthat
يُدْنِيهِbrings it near منكِto you طِلابُseeking دينيmy due
My body is the phantom that
My body is the phantom which
the quest for my due brings close to you.
My longing creates before you.
ولقدand indeed خَفِيتُI became unseen منfrom الضّناwasting sickness
وأمِنْتُand I became safe from لَحْظَthe gaze of الكاشحينِthe spiteful
And indeed, I have grown invisible from wasting sickness,
And I was hidden from suspicion,
and am safe from the gaze of the spiteful.
Trusting the looks of slanderers.
ولئنand if indeed سلمتُI escaped منfrom الرّدىdeath
فلأنّهُthen because it لمdid not يدرknow أيْنيmy whereabouts
And if I have escaped death,
And if I escaped perdition,
it is because death did not know where I was.
It was because none knew where I was.
