She kept the spiteful and the reproachers away from him,
The gazelles prohibited him, and the reproachers,
as though she had filled his hands with union.
So it was as if he filled his hands with union.

With the tinkle of bangles pleading for peace?

Thirsty, he begs water for the bitter brine of his tears,
A thirsty man seeking water from his flowing tears
clear water from the cloud of her cool, pearly mouth.
From the lips of cold iron fresh and pure.

Until, when passion scorched his heart,
Until when love's sting pierced his heart,
he drank burning thirst and was given anguish to drink.
He drank anguish and was given confusion.

To him, wasted, she sent a phantom to visit,
Grieving, his imagination clothed him with a returning phantom,
as though a phantom had visited a phantom.
So it was as if the imagination visited a phantom.

Were ruins - and do ruins respond to questions?

How many listeners with eyes from his pains
speech and discourse through the mouths of tears.
Say with the mouths of tears and speak.

and found it abasement bowing to coquetry.
And found it to be baseness obeying coquetry.

She makes the white oryx run on barren land, and her injustice

Then how did they create warriors from you?

And the oath of your right hand in loyalty false.

Kindling a blazing rage in the text.

Or one wearing a feather-patterned robe,
Or wearing a garment with silver embroidery upon it
its legs joined to it as trailing hems.
Its legs' hems connected by trains

فَلَكَم تَمنّى الحسنُ منه خيالا
Or a black steed like night—as for its color,
Or black like the night - as for its color
how often beauty has wished for an image of it!
How much beauty wished for its imagination!

An emerald treads smooth stone with its onyx,
It walked on the plain with pride - from it an emerald
raising it as a dust cloud in the air around it.
Stirring the air within it into agitation

سُفُنٌ مدافعةٌ صَباً وشمالا
And the mature camels sway with their canopies, as though
And the corpses with domed howdahs as if they were
they were ships contending with east and north winds.
Ships repelling the winds, north and south

As though they carried hillocks that had flowered,
And as if they carried rubies which gleamed
and been watered with bucketfuls of spring's pouring rain.
And chrysolites watered from the downpour of spring,
وَكَأَنَّماand as though زُفَّتْwere led in procession لَهُنَّto them عَرائِساًas brides

And as though they were brought to them as brides,
And as if they were led to them brides
to alight in the welcoming abode of your glory.
To dissolve your glorious pride in pleasure

They set out early, rising toward the crescent, and did not turn back
The new moon rose for the crescent and did not bow
until you saw the crescent rise for them.
Until you saw it rise to the crescent.

You prayed, then slaughtered, following the ways of guidance,
You prayed and then slaughtered in the ways of guidance
sacrificial camels, as you slaughter foes in battle.
Bodies like your slaughter in the clash of battle

And you followed Ahmad's practice and showed us
And you followed the way of Ahmad and showed us
in your own actions an example of his actions.
From his action through your action an example.

مجداً وتهدمُ بالمكارمِ مالا
Then you returned to your palaces, building
Then you returned to your palaces, achieving
glory and demolishing wealth through noble deeds.
Glory and destroying with virtues wealth.

And you affirm names in whatever you desire
You confirmed names in what you desired
of high ambition, and conjugate the verbs.
Of resolve and directed deeds.
