أذابَ قَلبي عَلَيكِ الحُزْنُ والأسَفُ
O bouquet in my right hand, offered up to death!
O bouquet in my right hand offered to ruin
Grief and sorrow over you have melted my heart.
Grief and sorrow melted my heart for you
أَلَمdid … not? تَكونيyou be لِتاجِfor the crown of الحُسْنِbeauty جَوهرةًa jewel
أَلَم تَكوني لِتاجِ الحُسْنِ جَوهرةً
لَمّاwhen غَرِقْتِyou drowned فَهَلّاso why did … not? صَانَكِprotect you الصّدفُthe shell
لَمّا غَرِقْتِ فَهَلّا صَانَكِ الصّدفُ
Were you not a jewel for beauty’s crown?
Were you not meant as a jewel in the crown of beauty?
When you drowned, why, then, did the shell not protect you?
When you drowned, why did the oyster not protect you?
