    She came by night, while night’s wing lay outspread.

    Welcome to the sun, though it is not morning!

    A gesture greeted on her behalf, shyly—

    was speech not permitted to her?

    A graceful maiden, carrying in her eyelids

    a languor holding death for the healthy.

    I spent the night asking her for kisses anew,

    a boon from her I had asked of Time.

    I kiss the pearls, pebbles that well up for me

    with limpid water in which thirst is quenched,

    and slake the burning thirsts of longing with what

    lay beyond the power of pure water,

    with an embrace that held no lewdness,

    and a clasp that was no fornication.

    What blame lies on one for whom, in sleep,

    a dream’s snare has caught a white antelope?

    I was smitten with slender beauties; were I youth itself,

    I would never take leave of them,

    and would fend gray hair away from her, spurning it,

    with words of peace or wounds of combat.

    وأطِعْ ساقِيَها واعصِ اللّواح

    Soothe the soul with sweet basil and wine;

    obey its cupbearer and defy the reproacher.

    And pass round red wine: subtly there creeps

    its drunkenness, from its scent, into every sober soul.

    Do not let a blush in it deceive you:

    it displays that blush upon a brazen cheek.

    And pour water over it; you will learn from both

    that there is accord between water and fire.

    And when wine’s purity has guarded it,

    mixing leaves its sanctuary open to violation.

    لا يُرَدّ المهرُ عن طَبْع المراح

    Let me spend my youth in merriment;

    a colt cannot be turned from its natural friskiness.

    Only a young man lives at ease in this world

    who offers it earnestness in the guise of jest.

    ليس يَشفي الرّوحَ إلّا كأسُ راح

    So give me drink, by leave of passion’s sovereign;

    nothing heals the soul but a cup of wine.

    And await, after me, the return of sober judgment:

    many a wrong has ended in right.

    والكثيبُ ارتَجّ والعنبرُ فاح

    For the bough has swayed and the full moon appeared,

    and the dune has quivered, and ambergris has spread its scent;

    كابنِ ماءٍ ضمَّ للوكرِ جناح

    and the sky has tilted with the Pleiades,

    like a waterbird folding its wing into the nest;

    باقةً من ياسمينٍ أو أقاح

    and as though the west were inhaling from them

    a bouquet of jasmine or daisies;

    and as though radiant dawn, out of

    night’s shadows, cried out against the darkness.

    So drink wine, and never withdraw your hand

    from pleasure’s hand, morning and evening.

    Weigh down your palm with one of its cups,

    a large goblet from a full-hipped maiden’s hand,

    in a garden planted by the rain,

    fragrant with breezes, its open grounds embroidered.

    Flowers there capture the gaze,

    then offer it pure blossoms.

    The cloud suckled its bān trees with milk,

    so the figures of beauties grew up within it.

    The limbs of every bough are seized by

    the tremor of one drunk on a morning cup.

    It wears the yellow dye of wars whenever

    Barāḥ, the sun, bids farewell at day’s edge.

    وكأنّ الطلّ كافورُ رباح

    So the soil seems like strong-scented musk,

    and the dew like Rabāḥ camphor;

    and as though the meadow’s flowers were sprinkled

    with rosewater by the mouths of the winds.

    Will you not seize a life whose passing

    exacts from you each morning and evening?

    And when you leave the prime of youth,

    the nights will be miserly with your wishes.
