Be gentle, O tormentor of hearts!

Do you not fear incurring sins?

When will your rising send through my eyelids

the radiance of a sun forever setting?

And how often sorrows over you wear my body away!

Is there no relief with you from these sorrows?

And you have cast lots for my heart’s ten shares

with your two arrows, al-Muʿallā and al-Raqīb.

And I have never heard that the eyes of wide-eyed women

    cast their lot-arrows over hearts.
