How long, between al-Liwā and al-Ajraʿ,

will this reproach go on? How bitter it sounds to me!

Woe to you! Had you been faithful, you would not have said,

“Woe to you! Do not weep over a desolate ruin.”

For they have passed and have not yet returned.

among ruined traces and timeworn dwellings,

with tears hovering between the eyelids,

and tears alighting on the cheeks,

    and sigh joined to sigh,

rising from the fire of a seared heart?

You stood in the dwelling with an eye that does not see

the dwelling’s change, and an ear that does not heed,

and anguish of longing unlike my anguish,

and ribs in love’s anguish unlike my ribs.

Only in sorrow can one weep as I weep,

and one in pain recognizes my pain in it.

If the campsite, mute though it is, could be made to speak

by supplication, my supplication would have made it speak.

And a calamity turned its gray-dove songstresses

into mourners, weeping with me in sorrow.

As though, although they have no tears,

the rain had lent them brimming buckets of my tears.

O dwelling, which the hand of decay shreds

like a threadbare Yemeni cloth left unpatched,

by God, tell me: are you their dwelling,

or a pasture for gazelles grazing at ease?

It said, “Rather, I am their dwelling; it is only that

the suns of my horizon have departed from me.”

The screens of the wooded hollows concealed a gazelle

who turns two bewitching eyes behind her veil.

Her glance is a sword, an arrow, and a keen spear.

How wondrous her varied ways of slaying!

When you jest with her, she seems to smile

revealing hailstones amid gleaming flashes of lightning,

like daisies in a meadow, burnished

by the sun’s polishing file in melting dew.

As though her mouth held the choicest wine,

pure, diluted with the glistening moisture of her teeth.

When the cup’s nursling listens before dawn

to the whistle of the trilling bird,

its song carries a meaning that makes one despair

in the language of union, yet words that kindle hope.

And a wilderness stretching into another wilderness,

    barren, brimming with billowing mirage,

as though sheets were unfurled above it,

lifted whenever Dhukāʾ, the sun, leans away from them.

the tune of a melodious, resounding singer.

    يقبضُ فيه روحَ كلِّ زعزعِ

    A scorching heat melts the solid rock;

it seizes there the soul of every gale.

Each hollow there holds water; and roasted

within it by the sun’s blaze is every frog.

No fire is kindled in the darkness for its travelers

except the gleam of the nimble wolf’s eye.

like the quivering of a leveled Samhari spear.

It trails spent camels, drooping as they travel; never

are the resolute driver’s whips lifted from them.

It strikes at their scarred backbone joints,

then grazes in them, sniffing with its nose.

    shod with the four winds,

she were bitten among stinging vipers.

She is urged on by the spell of a sleepless, swaying man,

    bold of heart, quick-witted, discerning.

And the stars, like gray horses, are loosed to race

toward a west where rising gives way to setting,

as though they were laying down their cheeks

for a slumber there, though they do not sleep.
