The caliph of the realm—you see in his presence

    the sun's successor, dispelling darkness.

A slender lance planted in brass,

she has a keen spearhead of fire.

She displays a compact back of wax,

which, but for cotton's marrow, would not stand straight.

Her body, then, is of solid gold,

melted by its own blazing spirit.

You clip an excess bit from her crown,

as you clip a pen's head with shears.

Thus her light is renewed by that,

as though it were health after sickness.

It devours her, while she is its food—

a tongue from her, though it is in no mouth.

    She is like a dancer among us;

not a foot of hers has moved in the dance.

    Standing in a yellow garment,

she has set a single sleeve of it moving for us.
