And when she saw the birds of parting cawing,

and everyone being bid farewell was preparing to say goodbye,

she lamented, as the sorrowful do, the resolve to part,

and made a frightened gazelle's two eyes weep for her.

Never before her had I seen, on a cheek behind a fastened veil,

among slender beauties, shooting stars in the cloud of a veil.

And she had unveiled a pallor; sorrow spoke

to my eyes, through it, of a grief-stricken heart's anguish.

And the pearls at her throat came forth above her breast,

as pearls of tears from her cheek clasped hands with them.

So, my Lord, indeed separation's reversals are now

against me, and I have no helper—so be with me,

in the face of my reproachers' nearness and my beloveds' distance,

and the waters of my eyelids and the fires within my ribs.
