The bass string has resounded with the treble string.
The clouds rumbled in harmony with thunder,
So rise for a moment, if you please.
So rise a little, not by command.

Rise, bring it—clearer, when swirled
Rise, bring the purest when it tinkles,
In the cup, than a forsaken lover’s tear.
In the goblet, from an abandoned teardrop,

From the hand of a maiden whose cheek
From a virgin's hand that has a cheek,
Leaves the houris’ eyes bewildered.
In which the eyes of the maidens wander in confusion.

She spoke, and pearls scattered from
She spoke and pearl sprinkled,
A nosegay of narcissus and gillyflowers.
From the breath of narcissus and myrtle.

And her breaths were ambergris-fragrant,
Her breaths diffused an aroma,
A smile revealing a waft of camphor.
That smile from the scent of camphor.

The night and the ten nights say to me,
The night and the tenth tell me,
Since yesterday, in unconcealed words:
Since yesterday, an uncovered saying:

وباطني في الخمر نسطوري
‘Are you Muslim?’ I said, ‘Yes, outwardly;
“Are you Muslim?” I said yes outwardly,
And inwardly, in matters of wine, I am Nestorian.’
But inwardly I am absorbed in wine.

For this reason, ever since you two came, I have been
Because of this since you both came,
Somewhere between drunk and hungover.
I have been between intoxicated and drunk.

So rejoice in the day of Eid, and sit for it
So enjoy the day of Eid and sit for it,
In seclusion, as a happy man sits.
In solitude, a sitting of joy.

And sacrifice that day the wine jars that
Make clear in it with the goblets that,
Gurgle amid the bass and treble strings.
Drip between clouds and thunder.

From every jar, the blood of its jugular veins
From every goblet whose insides,
Is more lawful than the flesh of swine.
Are sweeter than pork meat.

And have the oud brought, and send it over,
Prepare the lute and direct it,
So that we may pray with tanburs.
Until we pray with tambourines.

The first prayer-cycle is Surayjiyya music,
The first bowing is my haste,
And the closing prayer-cycle is Makhuri.
And the bowing of peace is my drunkenness.

And this is the Eid prayer: there is a difference
This is the Eid prayer, it is not equal,
Between my lightening it and my falling short.
For you to permit and for me to shorten.
