قالت وقد كشف الودا
عcompletion of 'farewell' قناعveil حزنٍsorrow قدalready علنbecame manifest
ع قناع حزنٍ قد علن
She said, as farewell lifted
She said, as sorrow unveiled
the veil of a sorrow now revealed,
Its mask of accumulated grief
وأذلand humbled بالجزعthrough anguish الفراparting (first part)
وأذل بالجزع الفرا
قcompletion of 'parting' قويstrong عزاءٍfortitude ممتهنabased
ق قوي عزاءٍ ممتهن
and parting, through anguish, humbled
And lamentation weakened the steadfast,
one strong in fortitude, now abased:
The strong comforter made feeble,
ياO منyou who مُحنتI was afflicted بفقدهby losing him
يا من مُحنت بفقده
حوشيتُmay I be spared فيكconcerning you منfrom المحنafflictions
حوشيتُ فيك من المحن
O you, whose loss has afflicted me,
"Oh you who suffered his loss,
may I be spared afflictions concerning you.
I sheltered you from suffering,
خلفتنيyou left me والحزنand grief بعafter (first part)
خلفتني والحزن بع
دكcompletion of 'after you' ياO قرينيmy companion فيin قرنa binding cord
دك يا قريني في قرن
You left me and grief, after
You left me, sorrow still clings,
you, my companion, bound by one cord.
My companion through the ages,
فإذاand if صبرتI endure ضرورةًof necessity
فإذا صبرت ضرورةً
صبرthe endurance of الوقيذone struck senseless علىin the face of الوسنdrowsiness
صبر الوقيذ على الوسن
And if I endure out of necessity,
So if you endure out of necessity,
it is as one struck senseless endures drowsiness.
Like the baby camel endures branding,
فترىso do you think يطيقcan bear الصبرendurance عنaway from
فترى يطيق الصبر عن
كyou أوor السلوforgetting one's love أبوfather of الحسنal-Hasan
ك أو السلو أبو الحسن
So do you think he can bear separation from
You will see one can bear the sorrow
you, or forget you—Abu al-Hasan?
Or find solace, oh Abu Hasan.
طفلٌa child نشاgrew up وفؤادهand his heart
طفلٌ نشا وفؤاده
بكby you الوقيذone struck senseless علىin the face of الوسنdrowsiness
بك الوقيذ على الوسن
A child who grew up, whose heart
A child grew up, his heart
is stricken by you, facing drowsiness,
Weeping like a branded camel,
كالفرخlike a fledgling يضعفis weak قلبهhis heart
كالفرخ يضعف قلبه
عنfrom أنto يودعbe bidden farewell بالحزنwith sorrow
عن أن يودع بالحزن
like a fledgling whose heart is too weak
His heart too weak to bid farewell
to be bidden farewell in sorrow.
Or bear the sorrow.
فأجبتهاso I answered her وهيand she التيwho اسbeginning of 'took possession'
فأجبتها وهي التي اس
تولتcompletion of 'took possession' عليover me بلاwithout ثمنa price
تولت علي بلا ثمن
So I answered her—she who
I answered her, she who cared for me
had taken possession of me without payment:
Without reward,
طلبُseeking المعاشa livelihood مفرقٌseparating
طلبُ المعاش مفرقٌ
بينbetween الأحبةloved ones والوطنand the homeland
بين الأحبة والوطن
Seeking a livelihood separates
'Seeking livelihood separates
loved ones from their homeland.
Loved ones and homeland.
ياO ربLord فازددthen gain more سالماًsafe and sound
يا رب فازدد سالماً
سكناًa companion يحنyearns إلىtoward سكنa companion
سكناً يحن إلى سكن
O Lord, then safely gain
Oh Lord, grant me more peace
a companion who yearns for a companion.
And rest, which I yearn for restfully.'"
