O you who listen to falsehood and its slander,

and reject the truth and its proof:

You are a man who has a place

in my eye, deep within its pupil.

How, then, can you fear the satire of one whose praise

of you appears at the beginning of his collected poems,

and of one whose poetry follows a path

where mention of you is his garden's blossom?

    His nights and days pass,

and his private thoughts about you match his public declarations.

And I am not one to dwell in a house

that is inhospitable to its inhabitants, even for a day.

Nor one who, in matters of truth, fears

the power of one whose authority makes him mighty.

Nor am I one who mixes ingratitude, in

giving thanks for your favors, with his faith.

Tell the one who prepared, in informing against me,

merchandise that came back at a loss to him:

O you who must be slapped

a thousand times, and have your ears twisted:

Do not be deluded because you are from Persia,

in the cradle of kingship and its native lands.

If Khosrow's own soul whispered this to him,

I would slap him in the middle of his vaulted hall.
