عن طيب معناه في لطافته

As if he were walking softly on cushions.

وهو يحب الصرار يفتقها

ويشتهي أن يجمش القطعا

ويشتهي أن يجمش القطعا

And he loves money-purses, ripping them open,

Yet he loves to unravel secrets,

And longs to fondle the coins.

Eager to uncover hidden truths.

فاحسم بختم القرطاس مقطعه

فاحسم بختم القرطاس مقطعه

وامنع يديه عليه أن تقعا

وامنع يديه عليه أن تقعا

So thwart his cutting by sealing the paper,

So seal the letter, ending his quest,

And keep his two hands from falling upon it.

And restrain his hands from wandering further.

واردده من همةٍ بختمكهُ

كأنه بالفلوس قد صفعا

كأنه بالفلوس قد صفعا

And turn him from his ambition by sealing it,

Redirect his ambition with your seal,

As though he had been slapped with small change.

As if paying him off with coins.
