1. أفسد سوء مذهبي

    في الشعر حسن مذهبي

    My bad approach has spoiled,

    in poetry, the goodness of my creed,

  2. وحملي الجد على

    ظهر حصان اللعب

    as has my carrying seriousness upon

    the back of play's stallion.

  3. لم يرض مولاي علي

    سبي لأصحاب النبي

    My master Ali did not approve of

    my reviling the Prophet's companions.

  4. وقال لي ويحك يا

    أحمق لم لم تتب

    And he said to me, “Woe to you, O

    fool! Why have you not repented

  5. من سب قوم من رجا

    آلاءهم لم يخب

    of reviling people? Whoever hoped for

    their bounties was never disappointed.

  6. رمت الرضا جهلاً بما

    أصلاك نار اللهب

    You sought approval, ignorantly, through what

    made you burn in the blazing fire.”
