فديت من لقبني مثلما
لقبتهI nicknamed him والحقand the truth لاdoes not يغضبُcause anger
لقبته والحق لا يغضبُ
May I be a ransom for the one who nicknamed me just as
I owe my life to the one who called me,
I nicknamed him—and the truth gives no offense.
As I called him, for truth bears no grudge,
إنif قلتI say ياO عرقوبʿUrqūb أطمعتنيyou raised my hopes
إن قلت يا عرقوب أطمعتني
قالhe says فلمthen blame نفسكyourself ياO أشعبُAshʿab
قال فلم نفسك يا أشعبُ
If I say, “O ʿUrqūb, you raised my hopes,”
When I said: "O dove, you made me hope,"
He says, “Then blame yourself, O Ashʿab.”
He said: "Then why, O ash-sha'b, were you led astray?"
