May God pardon her: on the day she departed, she was

The noblest of the dead, buried in the dust.

And had she fallen ill, her loss would have been

Lighter on the heart of the tormented mourner.

But she saw a viper sprawled on the ground,

The size of an unruly donkey's penis.

So she took it for a penis—and conjectures are false

When they tell of all that lies hidden.

And she plunged toward it from high ground; between them lay

    Eighty fathoms of downward drop.

So she became a tale that spread among those who believed it,

Who had verified it as fact, and those who denied it.

Ruinous greed hastened to her, bringing her death,

And whoever obeys the dictates of covetous desires perishes.

So, you there, may God—her Lord

And yours—magnify your reward for the loss of Ashʿab's ewe.
